Winchester business gets Government funding to Grow

Ecoskill Managing Director - Peter Richardson seized the opportunity of getting £2000 to help grow his business.  Ecoskill is a Winchester based business that had been running for over 3 years when they won a contract in China.  This changed the direction of the business and meant some strategic advice.

Peter was an early adopter to the Growth Voucher Scheme, which started in January 2014, when he heard about it via his networking groups and social media.  As Ecoskill had been trading for over a year, had less than 50 employees and was registered in England they knew they were eligible. Peter said ‘The application process was really simple and only took about 10 minutes.  After that I was contacted by Lisa Harding from Enterprise First’.

Lisa arranged a meeting with Peter to discuss his business and create an action plan.  There were 5 categories to choose from:

  • Raising Finance and Managing Cash Flow
  • Making the most of Digital Technology
  • Improving Leadership and Management Skills
  • Recruiting and Developing your staff
  • Marketing – Attracting and Keeping Customers

Ecoskill decided to use, Marketing - Attracting and keeping customers.  Peter said ‘I thought marketing would be our top priority but went to the meeting with an open-mind.  At the conclusion of a very useful meeting, Lisa affirmed that this would be the best category for us’.

The day after the meeting, Peter found out he had received the voucher and set about selecting a supplier from the accredited and approved suppliers on the Enterprise Nation website.  After discussing his requirements, he selected TLC in Winchester to help with his Marketing strategy –helping with researching his target market and their positioning strategy.

"The work with TLC is on-going and is proving a great help in finding out who and where or customers are. We claimed the £2,000 and got it back after about 10 days - a really easy process".  Thanks to the scheme, Ecoskill are developing materials targeted at a new audience, established businesses who want to improve their profitability by going green and will revise their marketing approach and terminology since they now realise their materials are more akin to online consultancy than e-learning.
