It shuts it all down in the brain as it affects the happy hormones.
Cortisol is an important hormone that is involved in the functions of proper glucose metabolism, it regulates blood pressure, helps with insulin release for blood sugar maintenance, works with your Immune system and is also concerned with inflammatory responses.
When stress takes over and cortisol surges you can experience lack of focus, no clarity and a very fuzzy confused mind state.
Serotonin and dopamine are neurotransmitters, Serotonin is responsible for the feeling of well being and dopamine helps control the brains reward and pleasure centres. Dopamine also regulates movement and emotional responses.
Exercise decreases the stress hormone coritsol and increases endorphins (the body’s natural feel good chemicals). Endorphins are the body’s natural opiate pain killers.
Excessive and prolonged stress can cause the body to produce too much cortisol which can play a role in craving “comfort” foods, overeating, feeling fatigued and storing excess body fat.
Sometimes stress can be a good thing and we all have different tolerance levels to stress. Be aware when you feel you are out of control!
